OMS new steel cylinders are offered initially in 2 capacities (see chart), are zinc metalized and then coated with a power coat paint.
The main difference between a conventional liquid paint as used on competitors cylinders and a powder coating is that the powder coating does not require
a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid suspension form therefore it is better for the environment. The coating is typically applied
electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a "skin". The powder may be a thermoplastic or a thermo set polymer. It is usually
used to create a hard finish that is significantly tougher than conventional paint used on other manufacturers SCUBA cylinders.
The most significant advantage is that Powder Coated cylinders remain metallurgical stable versus Hot Dipped Galvanized Cylinders because they are not subjected to a 850 Celsius Zinc bath; completely eliminating the risk of being annealed (softened) by the hot zinc bath...and failing hydrostatic testing. |
