7. Its time to install your shoulder/chest D-rings. One should be placed on each side and adjusted to where they will be located near the divers collarbone. Fine adjustments can be made later. To do this insert the end of webbing you’ve been working with through the top slot of the slide/keeper (from the back) then through a D-ring then back through the lower slot of the slide/keeper (from front to back). Pull the webbing through. Leave a few inches of loop before pulling tight and guestimate your collarbone location. Pull the D-ring assembly tight and repeat on the other side. Again, adjustments can and should be made later while wearing your exposure suit. Both shoulder/chest rings should be even. If you plan on using inner tubing to hold your back up lights and/or power inflator tight to your harness, now is the time to install them.

8. We finish off the main harness assembly by stringing the waist portion of the harness. Repeat these steps on each side. Insert an end of webbing through the innermost bottom corner slot from front to back. Pull through leaving more than enough webbing so as it will fit you. Adjustments can be made later while wearing your exposure suit. Now insert the webbing back through the outer slot (from back to front) and pull tight. Repeat for the other side.
9. This is what you harness should look like at this point. Next we’ll install the rest of our hardware.

10. Install the waist D-ring(s) on the waist strap. Some like one D-ring on the Left, some like one on each side. It’s up to you but OMS includes enough for both sides. Installation is the same as the shoulder D-rings and exact adjustments should be made later while wearing your exposure suit. Their final resting place should be mid body or there about.
11. Install the waist quick release on the left waist so as you have a left hand release. Get it close and make adjustments later. Remember to install a pocket, knife or line cutter (if one desires to do so) on the waist strap before installing the buckle. You’re almost done with the assembly. On to the crotch strap.
12. String the crotch strap the same as the image shown below. Leave the D-ring assembly loose at the non-looped end. The end will be threaded through this assembly once it’s strung through the back plate. The assembly must be loose to string another piece of webbing through.
13. From the back of the plate string the webbing through the 2" bottom center slot. Be sure the D-ring closest to the plate is in the same position shown in the image below (not face up). With the D-ring assembly completely loose with a few inches of slack, string the webbing through the top most slot of the D-ring assembly slide/keeper. Work it through then back out the lower slot. This creates a loop in a loop and can be adjusted later. Pull the assembly tight and we’re pretty much done.

Adjustments Put on your exposure suit to check adjustments. Try it out in the water and fine-tune it as necessary. The main harness should fit comfortably and not be to tight. Be sure it’s not sloppy. Adjust the shoulder/chest D-rings to your collarbone. Adjust your waist (s) D-rings to mid body (side). The crotch strap should be a loose fit with around an inch of slack. (When pulling it through the legs and up it will come an inch or so higher than the waist strap). The rear D-ring on the crotch strap (closest to the cylinders) should be adjusted to where it is easily reachable and won’t interfere with the cylinders or the divers fin kick. The scooter ring should be located a few inches from the bottom of the loop. You can turn it inside the loop when you don’t need it. Accessorize and fine-tune your new harness to your style of diving.
This is what your completed harness should look like. Additions such as inner tubing to hold the inflator or back up lights is your choice. Whether you want to run a D-ring on only the left waist or both the left and right waist is up to you and your style of diving. The picture at right shows an OMS SS back plate (BP015), one piece harness system (BP166), Steel 85 cu ft cylinder (C085), Non-modular DIN/K valve V136g-DIN, Our new 32lb single cylinder non-retraction BC. A great set up for the recreational diver. |
